When I was working at WKNT in Kent Ohio hosting the Afternoon Drive show, our News Director informed me that I needed a cat. I’d had cats back home but never one on my own. So he brought me a new born kitty. Obviously we need to give it a name, but we couldn’t decide, so we thought “lets let the listeners decide”. So we announced on the air that I needed a name for my cat and you could submit their ideas in writing. this was 1977, so there was no internet or FAX or email. They had to actually mail in a postcard or letter. Amazingly we got a lot of entries and when we got it down to 3 names we had people call in and vote. The winning name was: “Chairman Meow”. I hated it, but the listeners liked it and we declared that the winning name. Off the air we I decided to pick a different name, but what were we going to call Bryce’s Cat? Someone said, “why don’t you call it “Bryce’s Cat, BC” for short. So that’s what were went with. That cat was so much fun because he thought he was a dog. He placed catch, he’d fetch a stick, and other dog-like tricks. He lived a long life, but passed away at 18. I had 3 other cats over the years, and they were ALL called “BC” – BC 1, 2, 3, and 4. BC 4 was my favorite. I’ll tell you why in another post.
